Tiling Materials Selections Guide

Choosing the right materials for tiling isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s essential for durability, performance, and long-term maintenance. From adhesives to grout, sealers, and cleaning products, each decision plays a role in how well your tiled surface stands the test of time.

Adhesives: Fast Set vs Slow Set and Flexibility

Tile adhesives generally fall into two categories: fast setting and slow setting. Fast set adhesives are ideal when time is limited. They allow for quicker grouting and foot traffic, making them suitable for small areas or projects with tight deadlines. However, they require efficient working, as they begin to cure rapidly.

A strong example of a high-performance fast set option is Nicobond Quickflex S1. This single-part, fast setting, non-slip, polymer-modified cement-based adhesive offers S1 flexibility and enhanced adhesion across a wide variety of surfaces, both internally and externally. It performs particularly well in areas subject to slight vibration and is suitable for fixing ceramic, fully vitrified and porcelain tiles, mosaics, and natural stone. It can even bond to plywood, making it a recommended choice for more challenging substrates such as plastic ply.

Slow set adhesives, on the other hand, provide more working time. This makes them perfect for larger areas or intricate tile layouts where precision is key. A great example is a Flexible Floor Tile Adhesive, a specially formulated, highly flexible (S1) slow setting cement-based adhesive with a high polymer content. This eliminates the need for additional admixtures while ensuring excellent bonding strength and flexibility. It’s particularly well-suited for areas subject to slight movement, such as underfloor heating systems or timber subfloors. An added benefit is value: it comes in 25kg bags for the same price as 20kg alternatives.

Flexibility in adhesives is crucial when dealing with substrates that may expand, contract, or shift slightly over time. Without this flexibility, tiles are at greater risk of cracking or debonding.

Grout: Colour, Performance and Flexibility

Grout is more than just a filler, it completes the look of your tiles. Choosing the right colour can either create a seamless finish or highlight the tile pattern. Light grout colours can make spaces feel larger and cleaner, while darker tones can add contrast and help conceal stains.

Modern grouts offer far more than just colour. Nicobond Grout Pro Flexible is a single-part, fast setting, highly polymer-modified grout designed for performance as well as appearance. It is resistant to efflorescence, includes excellent anti-mould properties, and incorporates AquaBlok Technology, making it both water resistant and water repellent. Suitable for ceramic, porcelain, glass, and natural stone tiles, it’s ideal in areas where slight movement or vibration is expected. Available in a range of contemporary colours, it also coordinates with matching silicone sealants for a consistent finish.

Flexible grout is highly recommended, especially for floors or areas prone to movement. It helps absorb minor shifts and reduces the likelihood of cracking, particularly important in high-traffic or temperature-variable environments.

Sealers: Matt vs Polished and Porcelain Considerations

Sealers are essential for protecting tiles and grout from moisture, stains, and wear. The type of sealer you choose depends on the finish of your tiles.

For natural, understated finishes, our LTP Mattstone Impregnating Tile Sealer is ideal. It provides a matt finish with minimal alteration to the tile’s appearance and is suitable for surfaces such as travertine, slate, terracotta, and unpolished marble. It offers strong resistance against common household stains like coffee and wine.

For a slight sheen, our LTP Ironwax Satin Slate Tile Sealer delivers a durable, semi-gloss finish that enhances surfaces such as slate and quarry tiles. However, it is not suitable for wet areas.

When working with polished surfaces, our LTP MPG Polished Tile Sealer is specifically formulated to protect mechanically polished tiles while maintaining their high-gloss appearance. It is ideal for polished marble, granite, limestone, slate, and even polished porcelain, offering strong protection against water, oil, grease, and dirt.

Natural stone tiles, such as limestone, marble, and travertine, are porous and must always be sealed. When sealing porous stone, it is best to first apply an impregnating sealer such as LTP Mattstone or a colour enhancer, then finish with a protective top coat like LTP Grout & Tile Protector. This colourless barrier helps prevent penetration from water, oil, grease, and limescale, making surfaces easier to maintain, especially in wet rooms and showers.

Porcelain tiles, however, are typically non-porous and do not usually require sealing. However,  polished porcelain can sometimes benefit from sealing due to micro-porosity, so checking manufacturer guidance is always recommended.

Cleaning Solutions and Tile Sensitivity

Using the correct cleaning products is just as important as installation. LTP Grout Stain Remover is highly effective for removing cement residues, grout haze, and mineral salt deposits (efflorescence). It’s also suitable for routine cleaning of outdoor paved areas and can be used on glazed ceramics, quarry tiles, terracotta, and some stone surfaces.

Care must always be taken with natural stone, as it is sensitive to harsh or acidic cleaners which can cause etching and permanent damage. Materials such as marble and limestone require gentle, pH-neutral cleaning solutions.

Porcelain tiles are far more durable and resistant but still benefit from appropriate cleaners to maintain their finish and longevity.

Final Thoughts

Selecting the right adhesive, grout, sealer, and cleaning solution ensures your tiling project not only looks great but performs well over time. By understanding the differences between fast and slow set adhesives, the importance of flexibility, and the care requirements of various tile types, you can achieve a professional, long-lasting finish.
